Abstract
Summary: The first case of human babesiosis in the United Kingdom and its fatal outcome in a young man from Inverness-shire, Scotland, who had previously been splenectomised, is described, together with the clinical, laboratory and post mortem findings. The organism was isolated in gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) and shown to be Basesia divergens.
